Outdoor Sports

From L.E.A.P. President:

I have been enjoying the outdoors
with my parents and brother since I was a child.
I in turn took my own children camping
and fishing across the United States.
They now enjoy fishing, hiking, camping,
hunting and snowboarding
and my grandchildren are lovin' the outdoors now, too.
I hope you enjoy these outdoor family photos.

Best wishes for Healthy Outdoor Fun,
Tina J. Garcia
L.E.A.P. President

P.S. Be sure to read the important information
about tick-borne diseases below all the photos.

        CHILDREN PLAYING
Because children spend so much time outdoors,
whether in the wilderness or just playing,
they are more prone to tick bites.

The purpose of our educational campaign for those who thrive on outdoor sports is to provide useful information to help you be prepared in the event you are ever bitten by one of these little suckers.

●  Recognize ticks
●  Know what to do in case of a tick bite
●  Have knowledge of tick-borne infections
●  Watch for symptoms of infection
●  Know where to go for medical treatment

First of all, not all ticks are infected.  Different areas have higher or lower percentages of infected ticks.  If a large percentage of ticks is found in a geographic location, it is called an endemic area.

Some people have been bitten more than once by ticks and have never been sick.  Others have been bitten and infected, received prompt medical treatment immediately following the tick bite in the early or acute phase and have no residual problems.  Other people get one tick bite and end up with a chronic, debilitating illness.  It depends on a number of factors:

●  The type of tick
●  Whether the tick was infected
●  Whether prompt treatment was provided for the initial
   (acute) infection
●  Whether diagnosis was missed by patient or physician
   and no treatment was rendered,
   resulting in chronic illness

If you spend time outdoors and around animals, it is important that you be armed with the knowledge you need to take care of yourself and prevent long-term illness that can rob you of your outdoor enjoyment.
